          Mount Dora was first settled in 1874 by David Simpson and his family.  The name originates from Dora Ann Drawdy whose family settled 2 miles south of present day Mount Dora in 1846.  Mount Dora sits on a plateau 184 feet above sea level and overlooks Lake Dora, Lake Gertrude and Lake Beauclair.  It is Florida's version of a mountain-top town.  Come and enjoy a delightful nature-walk in this lovely lakefront town.  Mount Dora is located approximately 35 miles northwest of Orlando, Florida.  You can reach Orlando, Florida in about a 35 minute drive.

         It is a quaint historic Southern town offering warm people, hospitality and Southern charm.  It's downtown is filled with fanciful shops and boasts more varied antique shops and dealers per square foot than any other town in Florida.  This is an antique collectors dream come true.  Other activities beside shopping include festivals, dining and lodging and you wouldn't want to miss their Antique Boat Show.

          The first railroad service through Mount Dora began in 1887 and by 1915 there were two passenger trains daily in each direction.  The picture on the right is the Railroad Station in Mount Dora, Florida from a 1920 postcard which is now the Chamber of Commerce office.  Present day you will find Mount Dora's trolley car tours that let you see the city's quaint shopping area, historic homes and natural landscapes.  You will absolutely love your visit to this most wonderful Central Florida town.  Be sure to stop by on your way to Orlando or after your visit to Disney World and Universal Studios.  You will also see the plentiful orange groves that fill the countryside and the hundreds of pristine lakes that have given Lake County its name.
